    Question WHM FTP backup error

Hi, I've gone into Configure Backup in WHM (Version 11.28.42), and configured the backup for FTP, I've enabled it, daily, and ive enabled the following options:
    Backup Accounts
    Compress Backup Accounts
Backup SQL = Per account and Entire MySQL Directory
    Backup Type = Remote FTP

    Remote FTP Host = ftp://xx.xxx.xxx.xx:xxxxx
(Our office's fixed IP, with the port after the colon. I've also configured port redirection, FTP user and Password which all work when I connect with an FTP client (which I've checked from a remote site too)).
Obviously I've filled in the backup user/pass.
FTP Backup Passive mode is enabled.

When it runs the backup (1am local time daily), I get an email saying the following:

    cpanel@vps.____.co.uk
    to:
    date 18 November 2010 01:00
subject: Remote FTP backup on vps.___.co.uk failed because unable to connect to remote FTP server (ftp://xx.xxx.xxx.xx:xxxxx)

    The exact error was:
Then it doesn't give any error message.

Any ideas? Also, it only runs at 1am and I don't know how I can speed it up so I can test it.

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks
    Laurence

    Hi Laurence,

This might be due to a firewall or other connection problem.
Try if you can connect to your ftp server from the webserver.

You can test any time the backup script with

    # /scripts/cpbackup --force

    Hope that helps you.

Thank you for your reply, this is helpful, when I do the /scripts/cpbackup --force, it returns a slightly more useful error:

Unable to connect to remote ftp server
    Exit level [die]

In the CSF firewall thing I've allowed the port number in the outgoing TCP. Is it valid to use the IP with :34279 as a port number at the end in the config in WHM?

There is no firewall in the local decvice, it's a Linkstation NAS with FTP set up, and a Draytek router with Port redirection from 34279 to private port 21.

I can login using FTP from outside with an FTP client, and I've tried using the following:
    # sftp user@xx.xxx.xxx.xxx:34279

But the error says connection timed out, and on port 22 still.

I've just tried reconfiguring the port redirection so it redirects port 22 and 21, rather than the custom port but it still gets the same errors.

This seems to me a FTP connection error, for as far i know port redirection won't work very much with cPanel. It gave me in the past to much trouble.

I suggest you keep ftp traffic just to port 21 and for testing purpose make sure on both ends no firewall up, if you are able then to get it going you have to seek it in your firewall settings.

    Let me know theresult.
