3rd party webmail solution

Hi

We are running at the moment a customer survey and the comments which we got are very clear. A lot of the customers don't like the webmail solution which cpanel offers. The points are:

- should run on port 80, because a lot of internet caffes are blocking 2095.
- Horde is quite slow
- squirellmail looks ugly


So we are searching therefore a 3rd party webmail application which we can run on a dedicated server, without cpanel. The customers should be able to access their mailaccounts which where created in cpanel with pop3 or imap.

Can someone recomend such a solution?

Bad News:
cPanel/WHM can only manipulate accounts on the local server, not a separate dedicated server. Therefore by running mail on a completely separate server, you lose all integration with cPanel as far as users setting up auto-responders, forwarders etc. go.

Also cPanel's webmail system cannot be moved to port 80. However, there are third party websites such as cpanel proxy that get around this issue.

Good News:
If you don't like the default webmail interfaces, you can add additional interfaces as long as they are compatible to maildir and do not require mbox (meaning no NeoMail or OpenWebmail). For example, I know many people like RoundCube for its nice interface, you can go ahead and install RoundCube if you desire.

The only reason we're not including RoundCube with cPanel yet is it tends to be a bit of a resource hog.

Of course, others on the forum here have probably managed to get other webmail clients to work with cPanel/WHM other than RoundCube - I just mentioned that one because it seems to be the one everyone talks about nowadays.

Try http://nutsmail.com/ that can be run on port 80, but has to be run on same server

Thanks for the answers. I don't understand why i can not run nutsmail or roundcube on a dedicated server without cpanel and let the customers use this solution to read their mails with the imap protocol.

Of course I understand that i can not create forwarders or autoresponders in this webmail, but the webmail is anyway more used to just read and write the daily mails, when the customer is not at home.

I just found dwmail.net which is offering exactly this functionality that users can login and read their mails on an remote mailaccount on a cpanel server.

Are there any other webmail scripts which offer this functionality? I don't want to read mails from localhost, but from a external imap server.

You can.... y'all had an 'apples and oranges' discussion going there...

You can't run a dedicated mail server and have cpanel integration, but you *can* run a webmail app that uses IMAP to access email on any other server.

Horde can integrate with cPanel feautres like email aging, spam filtering, blacklist & whitelist, etc. It can also check domain wide email accounts, all of which you won't be able todo if the email application was running on a nother server.

So, if you don't mind this, and your users don't want that functionality, you could easily setup a dedicated server for readin email (overkill???) and use IMAP for that purpose. Bear in mind the traffic usage though.

You could also look @ www.mail2web.com or gmail, which can use IMAP or POP3, and both work very well if you don't mind the limited options
