Default All user mysql users/passwords not working

We had a problem with our server and have been messing around with permissions and files and etc.

We've got everything running except mysql. All users/passwords for mysql seem to be missing. Are these stored in a specific file?

Wheny any users attempts to connect to his/her mysql databases they get:

Warning: mysql_connect(): Access denied for user: 'dmchenry_imga1@localhost' (Using password: YES) in /home/dmchenry/public_html/gallery/includes/db_mysql.php on line 39

DB Error: Could not connect to the database server (localhost, dmchenry_imga1).
In cpanel, under the database names, where it normally lists the users for the database it says this instead:

[an error or timeout occurred while processing this directive] (Privileges: )
So I am thinking we have the wrong permissions on whatavever file has db users and passwords stored in...?

Your mysql database (mysql.*) keeps all the users and passwords, privs etc.

Have you made any changes to /var/lib/mysql/mysql/* ?

If you have a backup of the mysql db, that should solve any issues if the data is lost somehow. Check the tables first, to see if they just need repairing or something.

Yup..found out I overwrote it by mistake. Unfortunetly with no backup of it. I looked in my backups folder, but no luck there! Really sucks - have to have all of my users create new mysql users and passwords....what a pain...
