Alternate IP addresses

Just realized that WHM makes an odd assumption about additional IP addresses: That the only reason you'd want to use them is to set up domains with SSL.

Allocate some IPs and add them through WHM.
Assign a domain to one of the new IPs.
Now try to assign another domain to that same IP.

Oops - it doesn't appear in the IP picklist. There is some logic to the WHM idea of one domain per IP, aside from the main IP. But that logic was established in the days before a dictatorial country of one billion people - China - started blocking entire IP addresses because of one post on one blog on a shared server with 100 or more accounts. These days it's often necessary to assign a domain to a different IP, and unlike other *nix systems, WHM makes this simple task exceedingly hard. The only way I've found to do it is to hand-edit httpd.conf and /var/named/[domain].db and restart apache and named.

There's got to be a better way.

Is anyone aware of any WHM add-ons that let you change -- and re-use -- alternate domain IPs? Does cPanel have any plans to change this now antiquated behavior?

Configuring the IP address as a "Shared IP" via WHM's Reseller Center should resolve the problem for you; have you tried doing this yet?
