Question Anonymous FTP - Cpanel - Web Browsers?

OK.. trying to allow a client to setup anonymous FTP which is needed for his clients. He runs a print shop and the clients typically FTP files over via the browser using the built in anonymous FTP functions of the browser. Client switched to us and before us his anonymous FTP worked fine.

Setup client with own IP address. Enable Anonymous with control panel of client.

Go into CuteFTP and try to login setting things to use anonymous and it fails with:

    220 ProFTPD 1.2.4 Server (ProFTPD)
    STATUS:> Connected. Authenticating...
    COMMAND:> USER anonymous
331 Anonymous login ok, send your complete email address as your password.
    COMMAND:> PASS *****
    530-Unable to set anonymous privileges.
    530 Login incorrect.
    ERROR:> Not logged in.
    STATUS:> Connection closed.

Now.. if I change the settings to login with a username "anonymous@domainname.com" with any email address for the password it works. However this is NOT the way anonymous FTP is suppose to work

This needs to be fixed! As things stand now I believe Cpanel does not offer true anonymous FTP not even for accounts with a dedicated IP address. True anonymous FTP access allows for a username of "anonymous" which is typically coded in various software applications before hand and does not allow the user a option to change the setting, instead they have to resort to providing a username and password, which totally defeats the purpose of anonymous for many of these users.

Hopefully there is a fix already and maybe we are just not doing things right. We are using ProFTP 1.2.4

    Default is on..

anonymous is on for this account, does the FTP service have to be stopped and started again for this to work?

    Default still same...

Still issue after stopping and starting service.

Strange thing is that ProFTP seems to want to take the username of "anonymous", but fails with the password despite it being a full email address.

Now if I use "anonymous@domainname.com" as the username and any email address as password it works. However for numerous applications out there designed to work with anonymous FTP the username is set to "anonymous" and cannot be changed.

This is an issue and I would really appreciate serious thought and a look into this issue.

    Default Already stated that..

Already stated that this account is setup with its own IP in my first post. So this is not the issue apparently.

Account is setup with own IP address. In the accounts Cpanel anonymous FTP shows up, and both options are checked.

User can then log into the account with the username "anonymous@domainname.com" and any email address as password.

User CANNOT log in with a username of "anonymous" and any email address as password. This IS the way it should work, anonymous FTP login by default is to use a username of "anonymous" not "anonymous@domainname.com" that is just standard way of doing anonymous FTPing.

Hopefully someone from here or from Cpanel can tell me what is going on and why this is not working as it should.

Anonymous FTP access has always used an eMail address for the PW. Anything else is a customizationn and/or incorrect setting problem.

IMHO though, the better solution is for your Client to setup FTP accounts for each person who requires FTP uploading. Anonymous FTP uploading should never be used/allowed and by setting up individual accounts (which the Client would have total control over) is a much more secure method.

Your Client now has two different methods to offer, with the second one being the most secure.

    Default agree..

I agree the password should be an email address, always has been. The issue is not with the password, the issue I have is with the username. The clients account is setup with their own static IP, anonymous is turned on and enabled. They are required to user a USERNAME of "anonymous@domainname.com", when it should be "anonymous" only.
