Apache Parent Server Generation

Hi,

A few days ago I noticed in the "Apache Status" that the Parent Server Generation would increase over a period of a few hours, but now the server's been up for nearly 20 hours and it still says:

Parent Server Generation: 0

I only made a small change to php which is why I had to restart httpd.

What is the meaning of "Parent Server Generation" (Googling this phrase just listed 10,000 pages that showed WHM's "Apache Status" page) and what makes a new generation occur?
