Apache Server Status "OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0

After updating Apache, I keep seeing these on the status and they're resulting in huge processing load. I have searched the forums, but for some frustrating reason, all of the threads tried to explain what Apache is trying to do (yes I know what it's Apache polling its child processes to verify they're responding correctly), but none of them tell us how to remove/reduce this loopback requests, which is really what most people are asking for.
