Backup doesn't work

I have configured the backup tool in WHM to, well, backup my files. Unfortunately despite correct settings, all WHM managed to do was create three empty folders: daily, weekly & monthly which are about as much of a comprehensive backup as hand carving all my data to the trunk of a dry, rotten tree and then burning it in a gas fired oven. Can anyone shed some light on why there is a problem with what seems a rather simple task? My host has decided to move its servers to another data centre and put the responsibility on us in case they loose my data - fair huh?!!

Sorry, should have added that the backup is configured to a remote FTP server.

run /scripts/cpbackup

if you get the error backups up to date delete the cpanel backup directory or rename it to something else
