Hi,
What is the best version of cPanel/WHM to be running on my server.
Currently I am running a 'stable' build. Should I change this and upgrade to the latest 'release' build?
I think a lot of hosts run release rather than stable.
Thanks

You need to understand what the various release builds mean and how they would affect you.
The choice is not so much which is best but which suits you overall.
Some people will swear by a particular release build based on their own perceptions.
If you like living by the seat of your pants, for instance, then the best choice would be the edge builds

Check in WHM > Server Cofiguration > Update Config for the build types explanation from cPanel.
My biggest concern at this time is which version will correct the present CPAN update issue.
mrpalmer was concerned about the thousand dollar question.
Sticking with RELEASE is usually a safe bet.

Zero issues with Current here ATM.
I was having an update issue that was using up my CPU resources and tried a few different theings , But what fixed it was clicking "Update Backend Scripts" which fixed the upcp script that was causing the issue that was hangin the update.
Cheers!
Thanks for the info but a bit off topic don't you think. And I am curious about where you click on "Update Backend Scripts".Originally Posted by wgallant

We are with latest Release and all seems to be heaven so far.
Well, this used to be in WHM as an equivalent to running /scripts/updatenow.Originally Posted by Izzee
The WHM feature was removed at about the same time as /scripts/updatenow was modified so that it could (effectively) only be run, at the correct time, by /scripts/upcp. As far as I recall this happened a few months ago.
I can only imagine that Izzee hasn't done a manual update for a while.
"Release" build is a better option than "Stable" build. I haven't had any problms uptil now.
Depends on your skill and experience level ....
We have been running on EDGE at our hosting service and continuously update
to the very latest bleeding edge code several times a day and we very rarely
see any kind of problems ...
When on occasion problems do occur, it's usually a trivial matter to diagnose
and fix the problem within just a few minutes ourselves and Cpanel usually
follows up with their own fix by the next day so no big deal either way.
For those of you who are trying to run a web host without any technical experience
(why are you in this business?) in systems administration or programming then
you might want to go with a STABLE or RELEASE version that has been already
used extensively and gotten all the bugs worked out it but the trade off is that
it is much slower getting updates and new features going that route.
Still OT but FYI I use Edge build and for obvious reasons have always done manual updates. It has been such a long time since it was removed it is hard to imagine someone still using that version of WHM or even remembering it exsisted.Originally Posted by webignition

Spiral's comment matches my sentiment eactly. Personally I always run EDGE and have had few problems. To those with little server admin experience I'd recommend RELEASE (STABLE if you must). To those that like to play but don't want to take too big a leap, CURRENT is good.

Honestly, if RELEASE and STABLE are so "behind" and we have to wait for features and updates, how did my perl/CPAN get broken on STABLE systems? I guess all those people with little admin experience just got a bit more.Originally Posted by chirpy
STABLE implies to me that "waiting" and "not as up to date" equals "tested" and "unlikely to break in standard usage scenarios". The moral of the story in my experience is, STABLE isn't. Expect breakage within whatever update stream you choose. Crank up the expectation the further up the release cycle you go.
