Bounced Mail

Hi,

When user send a mail to non-existant email address, bounced mail goes to the ftpuserid@domainname.com mail id

All bounced mail should come back to the email id that send the mail ?

Well, that happens when the sender is using a non existant email address, probably using a script to send out the mail or something and is providing a sent email address that is not valid. ie user@domain1 to user@domain2, user@domain2 bounces because its invalid or does not exist and then it can't be returned because user@domain1 doesn't exist either.. I'm thinking this is how its working because I don't get much returned mail unless its this specifically..

No, this happen to mail send from NeoMail.

Also default id is put for bouncing mails :fail:, so all no existant mails will just bounce.

Now the user need to login to this defauilt mail id to see the bounced mails.

We're actually seeing this for all mail sent, the return-path is set to:

user@server.fqdn.com

Rather than the email address that sent it, never put too much thought in to it before, but now it is starting to cause problems for some customers with their emails being tagged as spam at other peoples servers.

Nothing wrong with that, it's the correct format for the Return-path email header record. If someone is having problems, it's most likely that you either:

1. Don't have a valid DNS entry for server.fqdn.com

2. The servers IP address does not have an rDNS (reverse DNS) entry setup by your NOC.

The email client can set the Return-path if it chooses to (e.g. if you're sending email from a CGI or PHP script) but one of the format you gave is perfectly normal. That email header record is a path of last resort and only meant for tracking emails, not for email delivery (that's from From, To, Cc, Reply-to, Sender, etc are for).

As for mail client allowing you to set it, I'm not aware of any mail clients that give you the option, certainly they allow you to specify a reply-to, but not return-path. I'll try and get more details from the customer, but they specifically stated it was to do with the return-path not matching with the email domain.

When I say that the email client (MUA) can set it, I mean, so far as the protocol works, it can. Whether the email client does, is another thing, most leave it to the SMTP server (MTA). I've never seen one that allows the actual user of the email client to set it. However, if you take a perl script as the email client, it can certainly set it if allowed to by the MTA.

Having said that, you do have to allow it to be set when using Exim (sendmail, for example, allows anyone to) by setting the following in /etc/exim.conf
