Can't create email account - Sorry, 'shadow' is a reserved username.???

When trying to create a new email account with the word "shadow" as in "shadow@domain.com" we get this error:

Sorry, 'shadow' is a reserved username. Please choose another name.

Kind of surprising since this is just and only an email account name.

What's going on here?
