Can't create new accounts,

We can't create new accounts using WHM. I also cannot add new users to the system, which is linux fedora 4 by the way.

when I try to add a user:
$useradd test

vipw lockfile /etc/ptmp is present

I read in other forums to just delete etc/ptmp, which I did once, but them our password files got currupted...I do not know if it is related to deleting etc/ptmp, but now I'm scared to.

I think the lockfile is also blocking whm from adding new accounts...

how do I fix this problem?

Just a suggestion: try renaming the file, do NOT close the SSH and try login? any problems you put the file back to original name.

Probably not perfectly safe, but safer than just deleting the file.
