I recently inherited 2 servers, setup and working. Let's call it domain.com. Well, server X uses ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com, and server Y uses ns3.domain.com and ns4.domain.com. In the DNS zone for domain.com, I have:

domain.com 3600 NS ns3.domain.com
domain.com 3600 NS ns4.domain.com

Then I also have

ns1 3600 A ns1.domain.com <IP addr>
ns2 3600 A ns2.domain.com <IP addr>
ns3 3600 A ns3.domain.com <IP addr>
ns4 3600 A ns4.domain.com <IP addr>

It seems curious that there are no 'NS' records for ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com.

OK, for the most part all works well. However, since upgrading the hard drive on server X, some users are reporting failed DNS lookups from certain ISP's (not from all, and not from any ISP I can reproduce the problem with). This thread suggested adding 'A' records for ns1 and ns2:

Interestingly, the 'A' records are already there, but the 'NS' records are not.

Any ideas? Should I add NS records for ns1 and ns2? Will that mess anything up?
