Default cPanel 11 and External Mail Server

I remember this was an issue with cPanel sometime back but not sure if its there in 11 or not. We basically use an external email server, however the DNS is on the cPanel server. If an A entry for mail.domain.com is defined in the WHM DNS with an external IP and then an MX record is created pointing to mail.domain.com, will all mail received by the server be forwarded correctly to the external email server?

    Thanks

    Just insure that :
    - you've added that domain to /etc/remotedomains
    - and removed it from /etc/localdomains
    - then run /scripts/mailperm and you are done.

if you want to test it out, use :

    exim -bt anyname@domainname.com

it should show you where the mail will be routed.

Doesn't cpanel do this for you automatically when you use the "Change MX Record" link in either the cpanel or WHM?

I'm not sure about this. But for me, I've been doing it manually for years

Kudos to cPanel if it's done automatically tho.

Would be good to get an official "yes or no" comment from cpanel. Anyone want to submit a ticket and ask them to comment on this thread?

I can't find anywhere in the documentation that says one way or the other.

cPanel does it automatically but I would highly recommend double-checking everything after changing the MX record in cPanel, only because I've had it come back to bite me later that cPanel didn't put the domain in /etc/remotedomains and therefore server generated mail was still trying to be delivered locally.

Did you log it as a bug? Was it ever fixed? Something like that would be pretty serious...

.. I'd still like to hear from someone at cpanel on official word on this functionality.

Yes, I did open a ticket, a bug was generated, and it was fixed. But just because it was once fixed doesn't mean it can't be broken again later down the line...

    Default remotedomains file

I've just been pointed to your posts regarding this issue because I have the same problem, although only since WHM was automatically updated. Prior to that this problem didn't exist.

What happens to me is that every so often the two domain I have commented out of localdomains just get added back to the list and the client stops receiving email.

Anyway, on my server there is no 'remotedomains' file, only 'localdomains'. Should I just create one and insert the domains I'm using external mail servers for?

Also, could you tell me how to run the mailperm script please? I can see the scripts directory and 'mailperm' but I don't know how to run it.

    Thanks in advance.

Easiest is from WHM - under the Email section click "Repair Mailbox permissions"
