Cpanel 11 works with mbox??

I have a centos 4.5 machine with cpanel 10 latest release, running mbox.
I want to know if I can upgrade to cpanel 11 using mbox and then convert to maildir.

Is that possible or cpanel 11 will mess mbox formats??

The default is "maildir" under Cpanel 11 so you would have to convert back to "mbox"
and yes that would actually work under Cpanel 11 but why you would want to do that
is totally and completely beyond me!

Maildir is infinitely far superior to mbox for a great many reasons !!!!!

Personally, I'd recommend performing the conversion before the upgrade. It can take a very long time (hours or in some case, better part of a day) depending on how much email is on the server. Once you get that done and mail seems to work, then move to 11.

I just moved from STABLE to EDGE a couple of hours ago on a test server and it couldn't have taken more than 15 minutes. But keep in mind, this is with the benefits of the box being right next to the update server and being on a very high-end machine , so your experience will definitely vary .

I would say get all your pre-requisites done before the actual move to 11 because if the pre-requisites are all taken care of (and they are the most time-consuming part of this process) then your upgrade *should* be smooth sailing.

It depends on the number of accounts you have on your server as well as the hardware configuration.

Follow the below steps to convert to maildir format and upgrade to cPanel 11:
/scripts/convert2maildir
Select option 3 to start maildir conversion process
/scripts/courierup --force
/scripts/eximup --force
/scripts/upcp --force
/scripts/convert2maildir
Again select option 3 to convert partially converted mail accounts

Is a dual opteron 242 machine with 4gb ram with sata disks.
i´ve 1000 domains, dont know how much email is "stored" in the server. I know that big part of the accounts doesnt store mails in the server, but some of them does.

If there is a command that does a recursive search in all mail folders let me know. So i could have a global info of the stored mails size in mb.

Note that a single mailbox if a few hundred megs in size can itself take 4-5 hours.

The /scripts/convert2maildir shows you at screen where the proccess is? or which account is processing? Just to estimate a time.

I did a recursive folder list of all my email accounts in the server and I see that 90% of them are sizes of 20k.
There are a few accounts with 400k, 1mb, 3mb, 5mb, 10mb. The most biggest has stored 51mb.

Do you think according to my specs I said before the process should take less than 4-5 hours?? Cause the conversion of the 20k mail accounts it should do it in a flash.

other thing.. when the process is running and you check send and receive at outlook.. it will show some error or it will check email normally?

What happens with customers that log using webmail?
The eximup will run after the conversion of all accounts?

a user coincidentally accesses their mail at the exact same precise
second their mailbox file is accessed. In that case, there may
be a momentary glitch that will pass quickly and hitting that at
the right moment would be shear dumb luck.

Webmail will be just fine. Actually works better under Maildir.

Eximup doesn't run automatically after a conversion but it
wouldn't hurt and might actually be a good idea.

As for the length of time it takes to convert, it really depends
on your server. If most all your mailbox files are small,
the conversion will be almost instantaneous. If you have
accounts with larger mailboxes, it may take longer and
how much time longer depends on exactly how big those
mailbox files are. I have seen servers take anywhere from
a few seconds to a few hours to convert.

Umm. Maybe it's different for other people. I'm actualy doing the conversion right now. I can't access any email accounts on the server. 3 domains on the server are my own and i get "password was rejected" error when using outlook. So i think is does lock out all users while the conversion takes place.

During the conversion process, users will not be able to login to their POP accounts until their account has been converted. Also, all incoming email delivery is suspended by exim and is queued for later delivery, which should start after the conversion completes.

/scripts/eximup certainly does run during the conversion process since the exim build for maildir is different to the mbox build.
