cpanel password protect directory not working

I had set up a directory with password protection and was working fine.
Suddenly, it has stopped. When a user click on the link, it gets redirected to the home page which i have set up. If i remove the protection, then i can see the listing under the directory.

Please help.

What do you have in your .htaccess file for the public_html directory and for the .htaccess for that set folder? The public_html .htaccess contents can override those of the folder.
