Default cpanel phpmyadmin returns #2002 - The server is not responding

When I click the phpMyAdmin icon in cpanel, I get a redirect message than then a red message:
    phpMyAdmin - Error

#2002 - The server is not responding (or the local MySQL server's socket is not correctly configured)
MySQL is up and running fine. I haven't made any changes since this worked other than auto-cpanel updates on the stable tree.

    Any ideas or known solutions?
