i was told by cpanel support that;
"cPanel is not ment to run behind a NAT and cannot be supported when behind one."
how the heck are you supposed to firewall the box then?

You can run the box with a software firewall or behind a normal NAT (which yours was not). It is not made to be run behind a NAT, many people do and it runs ok, but when certain issues arise that are related to NAT we cannot fix these.
so emails getting stuck at 5-10% of being sent are related to NAT somehow? u would think that the message would not even begin to send
The point is that cPanel do not support you if you put a server behind NAT, so they're unlikely to look very far. You shouldn't use NAT for security, rather, you should be using either a hardware of software firewall (iptables on Linux).
