Default cPanel on server w/ private ip addressing

My cPanel server is on a machine that is assigned a private ip address. The server goes through a firewall with port forwarding to the Internet with a dedicated public IP address. I'm having problems with the DNS server not responding even though the daemon is running and the port forwards are correct, as well as DNS zones etc. The reseller said that the machine must be assigned the public ip address instead of the private one but that isnt possible with my network configuration. Any suggestions?

Does the port forwarding include both UDP and TCP on port 53?

Though your server is on a private IP address, make sure the VirtualHost entries and the DNS zone of the domain are having the public IP address of the server i.e. in short the domain should not be assigned the private IP address.

If they are on private IP address, edit the DNS zone file and change the A record to the public IP address.
