Question Cpanel's quota management: need some clarification

    Hi everyone,

I am currently struggling with the way Cpanel manages the user quota. Some questions:
    1. Is e-mail storage included in the total quota?
    2. Is there some way to change the default email quota from 250MB to something different?
    3. Is is possible for clients to still log in to webmail even though their account is over quota? Our clients generally do not understand quotas and it's hard to explain why they cannot read their mail once their package is over quota. Also, if email is not included in the total quota calculation, it seems backward to deny clients the use of email once the account is over quota. Is there some way to change this?
    4. Is it possible to somehow enable quota warnings, but use soft caps? Our clients do not log in to Cpanel or WHM themselves, since we provide a total service (Webdesign, applications, hosting) and several systems break down once the package is over quota.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    1. Is e-mail storage included in the total quota?
Yes, since email is stored in the user's account (/home/user/mail)

    2. Is there some way to change the default email quota from 250MB to something different?

I think you can edit /usr/local/cpanel/base/frontend/x3/mail/addpop.html and change the form value from 250 to something else.

    3. Is is possible for clients to still log in to webmail even though their account is over quota?
Yes, they just can't get new email. They should still be able to log in though.

    4. Is it possible to somehow enable quota warnings, but use soft caps?
If you have a contact email set in cPanel, it will warn you about accounts reaching their quotas so you can log in and fix them.

    Question

Hi Vanessa, thanks for your reply. I still have some questions though.

Is there a way to change this? It would be great if I could seperate e-mail storage from account storage. At this moment, we would like to offer our clients hosting packages with a certain amount of storage, and seperate e-mailaccounts. Some of our clients only have small (5MB) HTML websites, but have 50 e-mailaccounts. Sometimes it is the other way around.

    Thanks for the tip!

Strangely, it seems that when logging in to webmail, they get an error message (white page, red error message) stating that the user is over quota. At this point only the account itself was over quota, but resulted in an inability to log in to webmail.

Point taken. Soft quotas would still be even more awesome

    Question

Anyone? The way Cpanel handles quotas by default is quite different from our usual policy. It would be great to have the ability to alter it.

There is no easy way to change this.

Please don't modify the theme file, it will result in problems . cPanel 11.25.1 provides a method for defining your preferred default quota for email accounts.

Some of the caches introduced during cPanel 11.25.0 were a bit over-zealous resulting the behavior you described. We addressed these in 11.25.1, and I think the fixes were back ported to 11.25.0, which is now awaiting new builds.

Thanks for the reply and good to hear some of these points are already being taken care of.

Regarding the e-mail quota: is there a slight possibility of this being somewhere on the roadmap for the future? I am not sure how many others users would love this feature, but I can imagine it being a pretty great addon.

It would require a rather significant architecture change to move the mail directory outside the user's home directory. As such it's not something we would consider before cPanel 12.
