Default creating a subdomain for development

    Hi,

First off I'm no expert with either WHM or cPanel so forgive my ignorance

I need to create a development version of a currently live and working site. The domain already exists, and I want to create a subdomain of it called dev.thedomain.com.
This can't be a cPanel subdomain because they are created in sub directories of the main site, which is not going to work for me - I need the dev site to run in its own website root.
So I've tried using WHM to create a new Account for dev.thedomain.com.
This is apparently set up ok - from what I can understand from WHM - but the subdomain doesn't point to the new IP.
The live domain points at xxx.xxx.xxx.81 and the dev domain points at xxx.xxx.xxx.79.
I've SSH'ed into 79 and seen that it's a brand new empty site set up, so I added a test index.html file in there.

But when I visit the sub domain, I see the site as it appears on the live domain. And as the index.html doesn't exist on the live site, I get a 404 when I try to view it.

What else can I check for? Or is this just not the way to create a sub domain anyway?

    Thanks,
    Dan

cPanel and WHM is fairly rigid when it comes to subdomain support. What you described is pretty much the only way you can do subdomains in cPanel and WHM without resorting to modifying DNS settings and such.

what I've done isn't working though - I wondered if anyone could maybe suggest what I might look for to fix?

I just had to wait 6 hours or so for it to sort itself out it seems, the dev. domain is now pointing at the right files.
