Default URL not working

I'm trying to access my hosted sites via http://shared_ip/~username

But when I do this I get the default apache 404. Have I missed something?

Have you placed an index.* file in public_html folder for the web server to parse?

Yes, everything works fine (including the domain), just not http://shared_ip/~username
