Delete Email via Imap

I use imap to access my email from various locations. I often delete much of the email I don't want to retain however when I access the same account using pop (leaving messages on server) from my pda - it still downloads all the email from that account including those I have deleted.

Shouldn't IMAP delete the email altogether?

try to emptry the trash after you delete the email.

imap dletes email just by setting a flag on the message.
pop3 doesn't know how to read that.
