Default dreamweaver sftp and access problems

I am a web designer and have a server with a few clients. When I want to build a client a site, I use Dreamweaver CS3 (version doesnt really matter).

In the past I have done fine by connecting to my clients accounts via SFTP, which is the only way I would ever connect for security reasons and the fact that FTP is just soo vulnerable.

I have always logged in with my root username and root password to create and edit clients files, and because of that I have been having major issues

Since I login as Root, all the files I create automatically become owned by root and therefore the user no longer has access to those files and cannot edit their HTML on their own account.

I obviously cannot login with their user and password (which would solve the problem) because I dont know their password as they have set this and I cannot see their password, only reset it.

Is there a way that I can login as that user with 1 password for all?

Im sure Im not the first person to have this problem, What does everyone else do?

    Thanks for reading

    Question

Have you tried using the customer username and your password?

yes, this works perfectly, but the problem is, how am I suppose to get the clients password if they change it? I can only reset their password, not see what their current password is

You lost me. If you login as that user, but use your overriding password, the files end up being owned by root because of the password and not set to username properly?

I'm curious about this. Will give it a try and post back.

Thanks so much for this suggestion. I knew about this for the cpanel login, I never thought about ftp access this way. It works great! This will save me from having to change ownership of the files now!
    Thanks,

Personally, I will log into the customers cpanel and create a FTP account for me. I'll use it, and then delete the FTP account so even if the login was caught, it is no longer valid.

I do like the ability to login with the main password in case of an emergency, but I will continue with my "temporary" logins to be safe.

LoL, Stupid me, that actually worked. Used the clients username and my main password, but now I have another issue, due to my firewall, I cannot connect to my server via SFTP, how insecure is regular FTP? If someone was sniffing port 21 would they be able to intercept my information very easily?

How do you guys connect to your server via Dreamweaver? Anyone use cpanels "Web Disk" aka "Local/Network" or webdav?

I will always feel insecure if I know im using an insecure line. Thanks

Regular FTP is a plain-text protocol, meaning even the passwords are passed in plain text. You could use FTPS (FTP over SSL) which is more secure since the communication is encrypted.

Web Disk defaults to using a SSL (encrypted) connection, but you could also connect over plain-text DAV if you desired.
