    Default "Drive Space Warning"

One of the automated scripts on my server called "Service Monitor" is sending me emails with text like this --

    Drive Warning: /sda5 (/) is 96% full
What is this about and how can I find out what is on this disk? Sorry for my newbie Linux skills but hope someone can point me in the right direction on how to control this situation. I use CentOS 3.4. Thanks!

As you are getting these messages for your root directory i.e. ' /' do the simple steps mentioned below to see which itmes are taking how much space :
    cd /
Than when you are inside '/' directory , do this
    du -ah --max-depth=1
This will show you the list of directories/files inside '/' directory aloing with their disk usage.
So once you know which items are taking space you can take steps to make room accordingly.
    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. How do I find out which folders are on "/sda5" so that I can start deleting files in there? Thanks!

If you do not know your way around a linux server you should not embark on deleting files unless you know for sure that you can delete them. If you want to learn how, you should probably look for some online tutorials on linux and the bash shell. If you don't want to go to all that trouble, you'll have to hire a server admin. Things like disk space are aspects of your server that you should be monitoring daily so that you never get into the situation you find yourself.
