    Hello,

    This means that

779Mb of 981Mb available disk space has been used and its mounted on /
You need to clear out some files as required from within your / partition or move them to another partition, to make way for more space.

    what does

    # df -h

Show for the other partition usages?

Thanks for your reply it's a very virginal server still:

    It says...

    Code:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sda3 981M 779M 153M 84% /
    /dev/sda1 99M 25M 69M 27% /boot
    /dev/sda8 125G 1.1G 118G 1% /home
    none 1004M 0 1004M 0% /dev/shm
    /dev/sda7 494M 8.1M 461M 2% /tmp
    /dev/sda6 9.7G 2.6G 6.6G 29% /usr
    /dev/sda5 9.7G 407M 8.8G 5% /var
I'm not very confident with shifting files.

I would suspect that you have old kernels installed. What do you get from:

    rpm -qa | grep kernel

    It gives me this:

    Code:
    kernel-2.4.21-20.EL.c0
    kernel-source-2.4.21-27.0.2.EL
    kernel-smp-2.4.21-27.0.2.EL
    kernel-smp-2.4.21-20.EL.c0
    kernel-utils-2.4-8.37.6
    kernel-pcmcia-cs-3.1.31-13
    kernel-2.4.21-27.0.2.EL

Is that out of date? The OS is CentOS

You don't need these, but they won't be taking up much from your / partition, as you have a /usr and a /boot partition

    kernel-source-2.4.21-27.0.2.EL
    kernel-pcmcia-cs-3.1.31-13

You only need an smp kernel too, if you have a dual proc machine, and if you do have a dual proc machine, the uni processor kernels aren't needed.

Have you downloaded much into /root ?

    # ls -la /root

    # du -h /root

You might have logged in and downloaded things without switching to another partition first.
Look there for a clean up of anything thats not required.

That's a good point. You might also want to se if you have a /root/installd/ directory which you can most likely delete completely.

I have no idea what I can and can't delete. It bothers me as the server is mission critical to my business. How can I find out what is safe and what isn't to delete?

You need to check your inboxes for all your accounts. Often times they run up to hundreds of megs of spam. Always the default address.

It's unlikely to be email. The space problem is on / not the /home partition where email is store. I would suggest you use the technique I've described in the past where you do the following from the top of the partition down:

    du -h --max-depth=1 /

This will give you a space summary of the level you are on in the partition. If xyz subdir is the largest:

    cd /xyz
    du -h --max-depth=1 /
    ls -laSh | more

This will then list the files in size order, if the space is taken up within another subdir cd into that and repeat until you find the problem file(s). Be very careful about deleting any files on your / partition. If you are unsure either ask here or hire someone who knows what they're doing.

Really? From his du it only shows a few MB of data - so what were the problem files in this case?

Edit: Sorry, just realised that I misunderstood what you meant be "spaced out"

I think I've figured it out....

I set CPanel to do a nightly back up of all sites to:

    /backup which is now 579Mb

I guese I need to move the storage of backup to another partition.

    Bingo!!

/home/backup would probably be the sensible option...

Thanks for your help guys I'm pretty sure thats the answer.
