    Default Duplicated mailboxes

Hello there. I have a problem with mailboxes, which appear in two different paths:

    /home/USER/mail/account

    and

    /home/USER/mail/domain/account

    Which is the good one?

actually they are both good and exactly the same.
You can ignore that and I think it is the way it is because cpanel at some point moved to the useraccount/mail/domain/user structure but wanted to be backwards compatible.

    Default not exactly the same

Yes, they appear to be the same.

The problem is that after email account creation, one of the paths is used, but not always the same for different accounts.

For example, I make 2 email accounts: account1@domain and account2@domain. Both paths are created and stay waiting. The next day, account1's email is at

    /home/user/mail/account1

    and account2's is

    /home/user/mail/domain/account2

as you can see looking for the folders you created.

Where the mail goes finally seems to depend on the way you do your first login. I'm not sure about order (lacking time for long experiments), but I'm nearly sure that path one occurs when first mail check login is done with an IMAP client (eudora) and path two when first login is made through squirrelmail. Both login methods are the only difference I can tell about the different accounts.

No matter which path is the good one for that account, once it's started, it remains there forever (I mean four weeks, the time I've been working with cpanel). Whatever email check program/method you use, it seems able to decide which is the good one.

So, whats the matter if finally the mail works?

I suggest two reasons to worry:
    1. We don't understand how email is working.
    2. Email backups and extra functions for users and resellers have to decide between two paths.

    Default MORE ABOUT DUPLICATE MAILBOXES

A few days ago I detected an arbitrary behavior about the available paths for mail. I've been makin some experiments The first thing to know:

path one is used for the first email account:
    /home/mail/account1/

path two is used for the rest of accounts.
    /home/mail/domain/account_n

Deleting the first account created and creating it again results in using the second path!
    /home/mail/domain/account1/

Deleting the cpanel account at whm and creating again the domain makes the same result. First email account goes to first place. No matter which email client logs for the first time.

    Experiments included:
Eudora 6, Squirrelmail, Horde IMP, Outlook 2003. The behavior was always the same, no matter the name of the account, domain, cpanel user.

An attemp to make a dummy account by creating a dir and copying inside inbox file has no result: cpanel does not detect an already "existing" email account.

Well my biggest problem is this issue seems to take up twice the space.

I have an account aglissman on domain.com:

/home/user/mail/domain.com/aglissman/inbox is exactly the same size as /home/user/mail/aglissman

This is the case with every email account on the server...

    What is the deal?

I have clients complaining about space when they are only truely using half of their email space....
