    Default Email routing question

Is it not possible to have all the email for a domain go into the default emailbox and also have it forward to an off-network emailbox?

The default is set up to go to the account's username emailbox

There are no other emailboxes set up

I set up a forward for username@domain.com to go to user@adifferentdomain.com, but the only email that is being forwarded is email sent specifically to username@domain.com

    Thanks for your help!

You can set a forwarder like
    *@domain.com --> you@otherdomain.com
which will forward everything to the other email, but that is essentially setting the default address and will forward everything and not keep it on the server. The fix for this is to also create a POP account for the domain, even username@domain.com if you want, and then set the forwarder to forward to both emails.

    Hi Mike,

I'm sorry, I'm not getting what you're saying.

Could you give me an example for the domain bobsite.com with username of bob?

By default, all the email sent to bobsite.com will go into the bob emailbox, right? Well, that's good, but I also want all the email to forward to bob@aol.com

So now I just need to know how to get email that is addressed to say john@bobsite.com to forward to bob@aol.com.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it!

I just tested a slight variation of my suggestion on one of my domains and here is what I did.

I changed the default address to:
    something@otherdomain.com,username@domain.com

Then I created a POP account for username@domain.com. The POP account can be anything@domain.com. To use the default email address, I had to set it up as a POP account otherwise the test message was forwarded only.

Email sent to anything@domain.com went to both locations.

For your example, change the default address to:
    bob@bobsite.com,bob@aol.com

Create a POP account for bob@bobsite.com and anything sent to bobsite.com will go to both.

bob already has a pop account because it is the username of the account.

I tried setting it up for bob@bobsite.com to forward to bob@aol.com and the only emails that are being forwarded are the ones specifically addressed to bob, ones to john don't get forwarded, they just go to the bob emailbox on the server.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks for your help!

    No forwarders needed.

    - Delete all forwarders and POP's.
    - Select "Default Address"
    - Select "Set Default Address"
    - Set it to bob@bobsite.com,bob@aol.com
(the default and the external one)
    - create POP account bob@bobsite.com

Those are the exact steps I did on mine and mail sent to anything@domain.com went to both.

    Hi Mike,

I really appreciate you hanging in there with me on this issue.
I'm not aware of a way using the control panel to delete the main emailbox, which is the one named the username.

    What am I missing?

Don't need to delete the main one. As far as I know, it's not an actual POP account like manually created ones. When the default address is changed to be forwarded elsewhere, the main account appears to disappear on it's own.

Imagik ... do you realise that you can have bob & bob@bobsite.com?

cpanel won't confuse them I think that's what Mike is trying to tell you. You can set up another email box with the name bob and it will display as bob@bobsite.com it will be a seperate address to your main. and you can then change the default from "bob" to "bob@bobsite.com".

least I think that's what Mikes trying to say.

Hope that's as clear as mud for you.

    Thanks for the help, guys!

It looks like I finally got it. The thing is, I wanted to keep bob as the default emailbox and have everything go into that emailbox to make it easy for the client to set up and know his username and password.

So I finally figured out what Mike was saying and I went into the default email setup and in the text box typed exactly:
    bob,bob@aol.com

That seems to have done the trick.

    Thanks again!
