If you can use an external nameserver, it is preferred. Many times, it is better to have dedicated name server than hosting the name server on the same box as the webserver.
yeah, but why? Does it cost cpu resources? Is it unstable?
Just curious.
Thanks

more of a load on the server. It can be CPU intensive during the update and can consume a lot of bandwidth. If you don't need it, I wouldn't put it on there. The problem now adays is that some people don't configure their nameservers to update frequently enough. This can cause replication problems. That's why I always pull my information from a reputable DNS server that I know perform updates frequently.
If you need a nameserver, do load it on your server.
Remember, I'm no expert now.
One thing I'm curious about. How often do most people (at least in this forum) update their name server information? I have mine update at noon and midnight every day.
Thanks netarus, that helps. Our server may a bit of an anomoly? Just a handful of sites. Given that, how often is it necessary to update a nameserver. What would precipitate the need unless we moved the site to a new server?
Thanks for your info,
bob
It was my understanding that if a person only has one box, it's better to put everything on the one Server. Once a person gets to 3 or more Servers, it is then better to use one Server, for all Name Servers.
Makes sense to me, but as I don't have mulitple Servers, I cannot speak from experience.
