Default Error running cpbackup: ls: reading directory .: Input/output error

I get this error when running /scripts/cpbackup. It will backup about 20Gig, then the backup will stop and I can't access anything on the backup drive, even a simple ls returns this error:
ls: reading directory .: Input/output error

That was on a brand new drive, I tried it with a second new drive, same error.

    What could be causing that?

I doubt your HDD is being over heated & may be this is the reason for it going crazy. Check it's temperature when it's nearing the blowing-off limit.
Also, can you provide the specifications of the HDD ? IDE or SCSI, RPM ? SATA or Barracuda ? etc etc.. may be someone has any idea on proper HW
