    Question Exchange Server Mail Configuration - Linux Cpanel

    One of our client have configured their MX record on our site to correspond to their static IP of their ISP connection. For some reason some emails are bouncing back.

    They believe it is a DNS issue at our end as it only occurs with certain businesses that must have certain configurations that are sensitive to DNS/MX records.

    They are using exchange server for their internal network.

    We checked and all the dns, ip etc are working fine, no problems there.

    What is the standard procedure to configure mail through exchange?

    Any suggestions, ideas?


    Account hosted on Linux using cpanel.

    If they are handling their own mail then you need to check that:

    1. They have an A record on their domain pointing to their exchange servers IP address

    2. They have an MX record pointing to the A record (i.e. make sure the MX record is not pointing to an IP address)

    3. Check that there are no MX records pointing to the server

    4. Remove the domain from /etc/localdomains

    5. Add the domain to /etc/remotedomains and create that file if it doesn't exist first

    That should be it.

    also, make sure they have a reverse for the ip they use as an mx.

    check on dnsstuff.com
