    Default Exim 4 and Forwarders

    Anybody else seeing that Exim 4 duplicates all mail that is sent through a forwarder, i.e. if I forward mail@mydomain.com to mail@myisp.com, then mail@myisp.com gets two copies of every email that comes to mail@mydomain.com?

    I am just wondering if this is systematic, or something in the config of my systems only.

    Yes, I have lots of people complaining that they are receiving duplicate copies of forwarded email.

    mmm, odd, I rolled my production boxes back to the latest Stable build and exim 3, however I have a test box running R45 (the latest release and exim 4) and all forwards are forwarded in duplicate. Note that this is forwards to another account where the forwarded address is also a pop account. I get one copy in the forwarded addresses pop account and two copies at the address to which it is forwarded. Example:

    POP Account: me@myemail.com

    Forwarder: me@myemail.com => me@myisp.com

    The pop account gets one copy, and me@myisp.com gets two.

    It's happening here as well... odd part here is that if you send the email to a another local address, a second email is sent... if an email is forwareded to a remote email address, no duplicate email.

    Here's the kicker... if there is a third hand redirect (it forwards to a local address and then again to another) there is 3 emails in the destination email box.

    Things that make you go hmmm.

    Again, this only happens with a local forward.

    That is how it is supposed to work, if you don't want to keep a copy at me@myemail.com you should delete that account and only have a forward.

    I know that I have been using cpanel for year and a half or longer, and this is how it was always setup.

    I can confirm that the exact same problem that Marty and EcpHosting are having is happening here too.

    There must be some confusion somewhere. None of the cPanel servers I've worked with do things the way you describe.

    This does not happen here.
    I added a forwarder to already added pop account.

    I only got one in the pop and one forwarded.

    Marty, do you perhaps have SpamAssissin enabled as well?

    I don't have conclusive results yet, but it would seem like it happens when you have 1) a POP mail account, 2) the same address as a forwarder and 3) SpamAsssissin enabled.

    Give me a break. Read my message again. The problem is not that one stays with me@myemail.com, but that two copies end up at me@myisp.com.

    My wife assists me in my business, so I use our main email address via pop access. So I get one copy of every email. I then forward the main email address to my wifes email address, and she gets two copies of everything in her inbox. Don't tell me that that is the way it is supposed to work. It never worked that way before Exim 4. I got one copy and my wife got one copy - That is the way it is supposed to work.

    I do have spamassassin enabled, and it is a local forwarder that I am having trouble with, not one that sends off network.

    Marty, I get exactly the same. It's the forwarder that's duplicated. Only one message in the mailbox on the server, but two forwarded messages in my ISP mailbox.

    Does your wife still get a duplicate email when you disable spamassassin?

    I don't know. I downgraded that server back to the lastest stable cpanel build with exim3, so I will have to run some tests on my test server, which I haven't had a chance to do.

    We are considering to just downgrade back to Exim3 as this seems to only be happening with Exim4.

    This is also not how the forwarder is suppose to work.

    For example, the forwarder currently work like this (all local forwards):

    1 forwarder
    -> bob@domain.com -> susan@domain.com (susan gets 2 emails)

    2 forwards (odd, but we tested it)
    -> bob -> susan -> jeff@domain.com (jeff gets 3 emails)

    1 forwarder (to remote address)
    -> bob@domain.com -> amy@offserverdomain.com (amy only gets one email... as it should be)
