Default Exim is driving me INSANE!!

Exim keeps breaking. Every time it breaks I search the tech forums and find a way to fix it, then it breaks again. It seems to be an issue with with centos.

At the moment, the servers are able to send webmail but not receive it.

Can someone tell me how to begin troubleshooting this latest problem??

    I have WHM 9.9.9 cPanel 9.9.9-S15
    CentOS 3.3 i686 - WHM X v3.1.0

Check imap. You may have upgraded it with yum, but cpanel uses a specialized version, if I am not mistaken. You could try running:
    /scripts/upcp --force
and see if that fixes it.

    Ok, will try /scripts/upcp --force

But how do I check imap? (I'm a newbie, I need idiot instructions for everything)

    /scripts/upcp --force had no effect.

Webmail can still send but not receive.

Are you receiving any error messages? Can you receive the mail from pop3?

    Hmmm, interesting.

Mail sent FROM webmail TO my isp addy in outlook works great.

Mail sent TO webmail FROM my isp addy using outlook never gets there.

Mail sent TO webmail from another server using webmail never gets there.

Mail sent FROM webmail to test@mydomain in outlook works great

I set up a test email using one of my domains in outlook, and when I tried to send a mail using that (FROM domain addy in outlook TO webmail), I got this error:

An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'pop test', Account: 'test@mydomain', Server: 'mail.mydomain', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '451 Temporary local problem - please try later', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 451, Error Number: 0x800CCC6A

Check your logs (/var/log/exim_mainlog and /var/log/exim_paniclog) they shoudl say WHY its down temporarily. I was having the same issues, it was a problem with ClamAV. It would shut down every 15 minutes when clamav would check itself. I forget what was wrong with it, something invalid in the AV databases or something check /tmp/clamav.log if it sais something about clamav in your mainlog.

/var/log/exim_mainlog and /var/log/exim_paniclog both give me permission denied when I try to check them.

/tmp/clamav.log says No such file or directory

You need to be logged in as the root user, are you?

    Yes, I am root user.

I ssh in to root and everything

(not that I usually know what to do in there)

Ok, I've got my problem narrowed down, but I don't know how to find out what is causing it or how to fix it.

It's clamd that's continuously failing. It fails up to several times an hour and doesn't restart itself; I can start it manually by restarting exim.

I set up a cron to restart exim hourly so it will get done when I'm away from my computer, but this is a bandaid fix.

How do I find the cause of this problem and fix it?

    Idiot instructions, please.

Same error (451 temporarily unavailable) since saturday.
Not done anything to the server, it has Cpanel updating itself - is there an issue? my main mailserver and starting to hurt us.

That one is easy, your client put :blackhole instead of :blackhole:

Go to the /etc/valiases, edit thier file to change to :blackhole: and that should fix that.

If you are not sure which one it is, you can run grep blackhole * in the /etc/valiases and it will list all that have it and allow you to easily find the one that is bad.
