Unhappy FAILED the md5sum comparision test + SMART errors

I have received an email informing me of the following:

    /usr/bin/pure-pw: FAILED
    /usr/bin/pure-pwconvert: FAILED
    /usr/bin/pure-statsdecode: FAILED
    /usr/sbin/pureauth: FAILED
    /usr/sbin/pure-authd: FAILED
    /usr/sbin/pure-ftpd: FAILED
    /usr/sbin/pure-ftpwho: FAILED
    /usr/sbin/pure-mrtginfo: FAILED
    /usr/sbin/pure-quotacheck: FAILED
    /usr/sbin/pure-uploadscript: FAILED
    /usr/bin/pure-pw: FAILED
    /usr/bin/pure-pwconvert: FAILED
    /usr/bin/pure-statsdecode: FAILED

as far as I am aware, no OS updates have been installed, is this normal, or is something wrong? I have noticed my server running slow the last few days, since I got this mail, I only just saw it.

This morning I've also just got these:

The following warning/error was logged by the smartd daemon:
Device: /dev/sdb, 9 Offline uncorrectable sectors

    and

Device: /dev/sdb, 9 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors
For details see host's SYSLOG (default: /var/log/messages).

What should I do about it?

Those failures come from cPanel updating pure-ftpd and so are to be expected.

For the disk problems, search /var/log/messages for /dev/sdb, the errors could be innocuous or could indicate an imminent drive failure. Often, it can be a good idea to plan for a drive swap to pre-empt any failure.

You should run smartctl tests on the drive to determine what the errors are and if you need to either place the drive, or its just a single bad sector.
