Default FAM/Gamin issue - Filesystem notification initialization error

    Hi all,

I am on FC2 and seemingly at random I have started having an issue w/ mail. Mail is sent/received fine, but webmail displays an error upon login of:

"Filesystem notification initialization error -- contact your mail administrator (check for configuration errors with the FAM/Gamin library)".

More annoyingly, Outlook users receive a pop-up error message stating the same, yet send/receive works as mentioned.

I have tried restarting courier-imap, bouncing the box, and removing and reinstalling fam and courier-imap via yum, but no help. I considered installing gamin instead, but I could not find a yum package or FC2 RPM to attempt to install.

    Any thoughts appreciated

I just had this issue come up for me on RHEL3, after an update to the latest cpanel release which included Courier-imap 4.8.1. My issue resulted from the fact that I had portmapper and fam disabled to streamline the system. I just had to re-enable and start those services and the error in horde went away. There was no need to install gamin, which is not part of the stock package set for RHEL3.

Been getting this error message in webmail for a few days too.

WHM shows I have the RPM "fam" installed, but trying to do a reinstall generates an error ("Can't locate cPanelRPM.pm in @INC"). Found cPanelRPM.pm in /scripts, but editing /usr/local/cpanel/Cpanel/SysPkgs/CPRPM.pm to look for it there just generates other errors.

Tried to install Sys::Gamin through WHM, which goes well up until it tries to compile it, then complains it can't find fam.h.

Everything seems to be working okay. But it is annoying having that error message up on every screen.

Have either of you considered trying to migrate from FC2 or RHEL3 to a newer RHEL or CentOS system? These legacy systems might slowly have issues as RPMs and vendors quit supporting them, since both are End of Life operating systems at this point.

If you had any questions or wanted to pursue an option in migrating your accounts to a newer OS version that we support, we'd be happy to help with those questions if you opened up a ticket in WHM > Support Center > Contact cPanel area. It might be good to plan ahead for such a migration now while most everything is working.

Here is a list of our supported operating systems for cPanel:

    System Requirements - cPanel Inc.

As you can see, RHEL 3 with cPanel has an end of life date of April 30, 2011, which is 6 months after the RHEL 3 end of life date. You can read about our end of life policies at this location:

Operating System End of Life Policy for cPanel & WHM

    Thanks.

    Hi

Sorry to be rather naive, but the above doesn't mean too much to me!

I use Outlook 2003 on Windows XP (SP3) to access an IMAP mail account which was set up and is managed via a cPanel user interface (accessed from a website that I administer).

Since last week I have been getting this exact error message popping up whenever I open Outlook, access any of the folders in the account or complete a send/receive to sync the folders ("Filesystem notification initialization error -- contact your mail administrator (check for configuration errors with the FAM/Gamin library)"

This error also occurs in Outlook 2003 on a different laptop that is also running windows XP (SP3).

I have been accessing the IMAP account with no issues for a couple of years on these two laptops, until last week.

This is beginning to drive me mad.......Someone please help me as to how I can stop these incessant bleeping errors whilst I am trying to work on Outlook. As you can probably tell, I'm not an expert on anything that is mentioned in the posts above; however this is the first and only forum that I have found on the web that describes the problems that I am currently experiencing.

Edit: Forgot to add - Apart from having to click 'ok' every other minute on these error dialogue boxes, the IMAP account appears to be functioning fine.

    Many thanks

    Rick.

    Hello Rick,

Do you run the server that has the email account you are connecting to or is this an account with a webhost? If you aren't the server administrator, you'll want to be in contact with them to discuss the issue and possibly point them to this thread. There isn't any way for you, if you are the end user, to correct what is happening. It is the administrator of the machine who is going to have to fix it.

    Thanks.

We're having the exact issues on our servers. Ever since the imap(s)/pop3(s) config files for courier received an "automated" update on 1/22 (not sure why they got updated since we every server set for manual updates only) . Last night we upgraded to the latest release version of cPanel and restarted courier-authlib/courier-imap and the issue persists. Customers are getting either of the two errors:

    ---
Your IMAP server wishes to alert you to the following: Filesystem notification initialization error -- contact your mail administrator(check for configuration errors with the FAM/Gamin library)
    ---

    or

    ---
Your IMAP server wishes alert you to the following: Filesystem notofication initialization error - contact your mail administrator"
Then " Header download for the 'Inbox' folder did not complete. Could not select 'Inbox' on the IMAP server. You might try refreshing your folder list to synchronize with the IMAP server. Account: 'admin - mail.*****.com', Server: 'mail.*****.com', Protocol: IMAP, Server Response: 'This IMAP command could not be sent to the server before the connection was terminated.', Port: 143, Secure(SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F" The same message for "Drafts" folder.
    ---

    Domains masked above for security.

Something on 1/22 really screwed the pooch on all of our servers.

What is your operating system? Have you considered opening up a ticket with us using WHM > Support Center > Contact cPanel or using the link in my signature, since it appears several people are noting the same timeframe when some update caused possible issues. We'd need a machine to troubleshoot to see what's going on, especially if it was any update we provided via cPanel update.

It is RHEL3 also. They are legacy servers scheduled to be decommissioned over the next 2 months.

I will open a ticket later tonight when I have a moment.

It was definitely the cPanel update. Because these are legacy machines set to be decommissioned, we had them in an update freeze since last year (no OS or cPanel updates); the only updates to be performed were security updates that truly impacted the servers and there were none this year (other than any cPanel pushed out during upcp).

Thanks for the feedback, Tristan. Yes, looks like I'm on an older RH machine too. I do know we have CentOS 5 available. I'll do some looking into what will be needed to upgrade the machine.

According to cPanel the issue is:

Add a "disable = no" line to your /etc/xinetd.d/sgi_fam, and restart xinetd for the change to take effect.

This should apparently resolve the issue on the RHEL3 machines.

Apparently that "fix" doesn't actually fix the issue. It fixed another IMAP issue we had users reporting, but it did not fix the FAM/Gamin errors. We're awaiting additional response from cPanel support.

For our knowledge, what was the other IMAP issue it did fix?

    Solution from cPanel:

    1) Install ftp://ftp.pbone.net/mirror/www.white....17-4.i386.rpm and then restart Courier via /scripts/restartsrv_courier.
    2) Switch to Dovecot via WHM >> Service Configuration >> MailServer Selection.

Refer to "Internal support request 1180602". It was another "Filesystem notification initialization error".

As for the fam/gamin issue, tier III support has concluded the only real option is to switch to Dovecot. It would appear this recent courier update was never tested with RHEL3 and so they have no idea what is causing the problem.
