FTP account, HTTP access, double login

Set up an FTP account via Cpanel. FTP connects correctly, HTTP connects correctly with no authorization necessary.

Password protected FTP account directory so HTTP access is by auth only. FTP connects correctly. HTTP asks for auth, fails first time then connects second time, every time, with new browser instance.

Cache and saved content has been purged before login attempts.

Anyone else having this issue???

Not sure if its because of this, but check and see if you have both the lines which says

require user and also

require valid-user in the .htaccess

See if you have any blank lines in .htaccess. If so, remove them and retry.
