    Default FTP ongoing problem....disconnects on uploads/downloads

    I am having an ongoing problem with FTP disconnecting while uploading / downloading several files.

    Tried:
    FileZilla
    CoreFTP

    With:
    PureFTP
    ProFTP

    On:
    Static IP
    Cable Connection (5500KBps average download speed)
    cPanel 10.xC153 (or whatever latest CURRENT version is)

    Keep Alive On in FTP client

    Modifed /etc/pure-ftpd.conf to have max connection per IP at 60 and IDLE TIME at 60 as well. Restarted ftp server and same issue.

    I have APF firewall installed with suggested allowed ports for cPanel shown below:

    # Common ingress (inbound) TCP ports -3000_3500 = passive port range for Pure FTPD
    IG_TCP_CPORTS="21,22,25,53,80,110,143,443,2082,2083, 2086,2087, 2095, 2096,3000_3500"
    #
    # Common ingress (inbound) UDP ports
    IG_UDP_CPORTS="53"

    # Common egress (outbound) TCP ports
    EG_TCP_CPORTS="21,25,80,443,43,2089"
    #
    # Common egress (outbound) UDP ports
    EG_UDP_CPORTS="20,21,53"

    On my own computer I have:
    Windows XP home
    Norton AntiVirus
    Firewall (Windows)
    LinkSys Wireless Router

    Host Server:
    Dual Xeon HT
    2GB Memory
    CentOS 3.4

    Any help would be appreciated

    I've had FTP uploading problems with FileZilla and with Dreamweaver's internal FTP client.
    Usually, uploads get stuck, and I have to abort / disconnect. (A zero-byte file is left on the server) I had to retry this many times before it goes thru. Failures roughly 7 out of 8 tries.
    Sometimes (while using FileZilla) WinXP totally freezes up while trying to FTP up.

    Then I tried another free client, SmartFTP, haven't seen those upload problems so far.

    In all cases, I did not touch the FTP client settings... things like keepalive etc, just used the defaults.

    Are you guys setting your FTP client up with "PASV" aka Passive file transfers?

    That has fixed a lot of my customer FTP problems.

    Why have you got a 500 port hole in your firewall? (3000_3500)

    If you're suffering disconnections, then they're more likely to be timeouts because of a poor connection somewhere along the line between your PC and the server.

    Disable the passive mode if it is enabled.... and try again.

    If this dosent work then better switch to some other ftp client,,, may be Cute ftp or WS_FTP Pro.

    And if you still have problems then what Chirpy says is correct.... and the only solution to this is change host....
