Getting hacked!

I recently had my server compromised.

What type of protection do I need to protect against hackers?

For example, this is easy picking for any hacker trying to bruteforce their way in:
http://ipaddress:2086
http://somesite.com:2082

Especially for WHM, most common usernames are root or admin. What kind of protection do we have against this?
