Google Indexing Subdomains

I have setup some subdomains to separate out websites I'm developing from my main website. I also went a step further and created the subdomain web root outside of my public_html directory so example.com/subdomain access wouldn't work.

My problem is that with no external links, google is still finding these subdomains. I tried an info: and link:subdomain.example.com search in google to find out how it found these subdomains with no results.

Does cpanel do some kind of sitemap or other index hinting that points these subdomains out to search engines?

Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks.

cPanel doesn`t do sitemaps. You should probably check your access logs and see if google was the one finding your subdomains first or some other website. Because I`m thinking of a scenario where another crawler found your subdomain, and then google crawled the pages where the crawler stores it`s findings.

The search engines follow links from everywhere, so even if a site somewhere else linked to your subdomain it will pick it up.
