Default Gzip / compressing have they caused these issues?

I admit I am a novice when it comes to all things cpanel (well almost) for the past year or so I have uploaded all downloadable products into images & store downloads with no problems. However on Friday I decided - i noticed that I could make the images smaller via cpanel which I did with no problem. I then decided to compress and also used gzip to compress even more. Now when when my clients purchase from my website and go to download, windows explorer says it cannot display the page.

Please can some techie talk me through this step by step so that I can get my website up and running again.

    Cheers
    Bridget

You may want to contact your hosting provider as they would have access to the server and could most swiftly determine what is happening and how to fix it.
