Hard limits on Apache memory usage

Hello,

I've been having issues lately with Apache using far too much memory. Each child uses around 800 megabytes. I have two questions:

1) Does anybody know how to pinpoint what exactly is causing this absurd amount of memory usage?
2) Is there a way to set hard limits for total Apache memory usage, or to at least limit the memory usage of child processes?

Thanks,
djbob
