    Default Help !! mx records

    Hi,

I need to make sure all mail for a domain is being forwarded to an ip address.

I have created an mx record with the IP address but the person I'm doing this for says some people are getting delivery failure messages.

Can anyone help ? I'm desperate.

I think I've worked it out...

If I set an A record for mail.domain.com to the IP address of the external mail server...

    MAIL IN A ip.of.whatever.box

Then set an MX record for the domain to mail.domain.com - this should work as its a fully qualified domain name ?

    Is this right ?

That's correct, MX records should always point to an A record that resolves to an IP adddress, the MX should not resolve directly to an IP address. The bounces were probably from SMTP servers that do a lookup for the MX record before relaying the message.
