Default Hosting a subdomain with cname record

A client has domain domain.com hosted somewhere else, not cpanel. subdomain sub1.abc.com is on my cpanel.
He created a CNAME record at his hosting which is:
    asa.domain.com CNAME sub1.abc.com .

Subdomain on cpanel works fine, but not the one with cname record. I cannot find, what record do I have to add in DNS WHM? Once it works, I do not know really how, but no more. I get only main server screen, when access through the domain asa.domain.com . What could be wrong?

Does this have something to do with the hosts DNS zones? I wonder why it doesn't point to the right place instead of the server's homepage.
