Default How does spam assassin work exactly (spam box question)

    Hi,

OK, I "enable spam assassin" then what? What happens to mail that spam assassin designates as spam? It gets delivered to the inbox with some tagline in the body? I can then tell my 3rd party email client to filter those messages into a junk box?

When I enable spam box, what happens? Where is the mailbox called "spam" installed? It did not show up in my file manager or in neomail or horde.

Alternately, I can use email filtering to 1. discard the email; 2. send the email to an address that I specify; 3. I'm not sure what "|/home/user/email.pl" is. What is it?

    Thanks a lot,
    Misha

there is documentation on this please read the docs or search the forum before posting in the future.

enable spam assassin - scans email and puts new headers in the email, and replaces the body. The spam becomes an attachment. You can filter it in most email programs. Click the configure spam assassin to add something to the subject.

spam box should show up the first time you get spam. Usually /home/username/mail/domain.com/name/spam
    or /home/username/mail/spam

/home/user/email.pl is a perl script that does something with the mail. You could use it to further process incoming mail where basic rules are not enough.

OK, I enabled spam assassin, made a new email account called "spam@[mydomain].com," then made a CPanel filter if $h_X-Spam-Status: begins "Yes" destination: spam@[mydomain].com

It doesn't work. The spam gets tagged as spam, but it goes to my regular inbox.

Sooo, I tried enabling spambox with the filter still on, just to see what would happen. Nothing happend. It didn't email the spam account, and it didn't put it in the "Spam Box;" it went to my regular inbox, tagged as spam.

Now I deleted the filter and am waiting to see if this will work.

    Any ideas?

I'm on Cpanel X using mac OS X.

Is your default (catch-all) address the regular (main) email account?

You could try to redirect your catch-all to another email account instead of your main account. Then disable the spam box and enable the filter (or enable the spam box and disable the filter).

How would I redirect the catchall to another email account? This sounds like the solution I'm looking for because Spam Assassin and the filter works for sub accounts.

Ah, my web host and I figured out that you can switch the default address. If you switch it to an existing account, the filters work.

    Thanks for help.
