Default HOW TO install CentOS 3.4 and Cpanel ?

    Hi there

I would like to have a detailed howto on installing CentOS 3.4 on a clean server and afterwards installing Cpanel on it.

I have also a few questions regarding this procedure:

    1. If I install CentOS 3.4, wich packages do I select during the install ? I know "minimal" (=with no packages) is not enough, because I tried this and it doesn't work to install cpanel afterwards.

    2. Which steps do I have to take after installing CentOS and before installing Cpanel ?

    3. I think you need certainly a version of Perl 5.6 or greater before installing cpanel ?

    4. Also ssh if I want to connect remotely ? I thaught cpanel was installing this, but it is not.

    5. Do I have to import the RPM key before of after installing Cpanel ?
    rpm --import http://mirror.centos.org/centos/RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-3

    6. Do I have to change the yum.conf file before of after installing Cpanel ?
I add an exclude line: exclude=httpd* mysql* php* perl* mod_ssl* kernel* (is this correct?)

    7. Any additional steps to take after installing cpanel ?

Any comment on the procedure is welcome ! I will then try again to install Centos 3.4 and cpanel, taken this feedback in advise and let you know the result.

    Kind regards, Steven

    Hi Steven,

    1. Do a standard server install
    2. Import the CentOS key
    3. Modify yum.conf as you've mentioned
    4. Follow the cPanel installation page
    5. Once it has completed, rebuild Apache
    6. Secure your server (there are a few howto's out there)

When you select what type of install, make sure you select "Server", not workstation, not desktop. Else it won't have the correct packages installed needed for apache/php compilation. An example is bison and binutils, these aren't installed in the desktop selection but are installed using the server one.
