Default how to kill this process?

    Hi,

I have a strange thing happening and I would like some feedback if possible...

I have a process running the processor at maybe 50-90%. it is constantly changing PID and its % of resource usage.

I cannot kill the PID becasue it keeps switching PID #s every 2 seconds.

This has something to do with X and the server says below:

    14196 root 19 0 14176 5728 1636 R 59.3 1.1 0:02 X

    Top Process %CPU 85.5 /usr/X11R6/bin/X -auth /etc/X11/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A:0-8uMRgU
    Top Process %CPU 65.2 /usr/X11R6/bin/X -auth /etc/X11/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A:0-WwbHKM

    lsof |grep X
    ============

    [~]# lsof |grep X
    spamd 1482 root mem REG 3,3 92524 99230 /usr/lib/perl5/5.6.1/i686-linux/auto/POSIX/POSIX.so
    logrunner 4171 ****** txt REG 3,3 5408 280655 /usr/local/cpanel/bin/.logrunner.5CEyXQ (deleted)
    webalizer 4172 ****** txt REG 3,3 3474269 51268 /usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/bin/.webalizer.bTTHpX (deleted)
    chkservd 7551 root mem REG 3,3 92524 99230 /usr/lib/perl5/5.6.1/i686-linux/auto/POSIX/POSIX.so
    ------------------------
So far my two possible solutions are:

    kill -9
    /etc/init.d/xdm stop = to stop X

But the thing here is I do not want to have to reboot the server if at all possible.

    another thing I get is:

IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email.
This is cPanel stats runner on ***************!
While processing the log files for user ******, the cpu has been maxed out for more then a 6 hour period. The current load/uptime line on the server at the time of
    this email is
12:25pm up 1 day, 1 min, 1 user, load average: 7.53, 8.67, 8.68 You should check the server to see why the load is so high and take steps to lower the load. If you want stats to continue to run even with a high load; Edit
/var/cpanel/cpanel.config and change extracpus to a number larger then 0 (run
/usr/local/cpanel/startup afterwards to pickup the changes).

and Im getting an email that says id "X" respawning to fast. Shut down for 5 minutes.

    --------------------
Now is it safe to kill all or to stop X without rebooting???

    Any ideas are appreciated.

    thanks

    Scott

Try continuing to kill the process. That happened to me one time, and I killed the process about 7 times and it finally stopped. It was changing PIDs on me because it was trying to run a few different tasks.

Sorry, that's all I know to suggest.
