Default How to set 'Reverse DNS Lookup'

    Hi Guys,
I have recently upgraded to a dedicated server and can no longer send any emails to AOL addresses. The messages get bounced back with the error:

"Reverse DNS lookup for your IP address is failing. AOL does require that all connecting Mail Transfer Agents have established reverse DNS."

How do I set the 'Reverse DNS lookup' in WHM so that I can send emails to aol users?

    Thanks,
    Ian.

You don't. You contact the company that you leased the dedicated server from and give them the ip address and the hostname you would like it to point to and ask them to setup rDNS for you. This must be done by the datacenter unless they have some special frontend software to allow you to do this yourself.

    Hello,

If you do not control the IP delegation, and most servers do not have control of the IP as the IP provider does, then you cannot setup a PTR record for rDNS in WHM and have it work. If you did set this up in WHM, then you should remove the PTR record you'd setup and let your host do it if they have the IP delegation.

There is a major difference between IP zone records and domain DNS zone records. An IP zone record for PTR for rDNS is setup this way:

    Configuring Reverse DNS in WHM

The only way these zones can be setup and work will be when the IP provider delegates control of the IP to the server, which again is rare and only happens if your IP provider does confirm they've delegated the control to your machine.
