How to support high traffic sites?

I have a server, once one of it sites have a few thousand hits per second, my server load will go really high and my apache and my other services will fail and the server will be very slow...

I've tested the same site with a few thousand hits per second on other hosts, which says high traffic sites are allowed... and it has no problem at all!

I want to know how do i go about making my server support high traffic sites?

Do a search for Apache optimization here on the forums. There are quite a few topics that match. Also, if you are using mySQL you will want to search for mySQL optimization. One of the first things you can do is disable KeepAlive in httpd.conf and this will help speed up pages from the get go. There are many options to make your server serve pages though. I recommend doing some reading here or hiring one of the great admins here to help you.

Other things that are more advanced that would help:

Recompile your kernel and optimize
Host images on a second webserver (can be the same physical box) like thttpd that has a very low overhead.



You might even need better hardware like xeon cpu's, scsi drives, maybe even raid. A busy website needs a good server

You are correct you cannot recompile a kernel on VPS because that is how it talks with the main server. I went ahead and replied to your email
