It's probably a bug in the distribution (they didn't upgrade the version number correctly). It wouldn't have anything to do with how you upgraded

hmm... not able to execute the UPGRADE file... just shows me some syntax info and instructions concerning a TAR or RPM..

    Did i miss a step?

    here's what I can't execute...

    upgrade_MailScanner_conf MailScanner.conf MailScanner.conf.new > MailScanner.new
    also getting the following errors:

    /usr/mailscanner/etc/reports/en/languages.conf
Apr 3 23:00:47 server145 MailScanner[24273]: Looked up unknown string mailscanner in language translation file /usr/mailscanner/etc/reports/en/languages.conf

I just went through the whole process myself again, using my own HOWTO and it worked OK

I would guess so. You have to be carefull not to cut&paste more than a line at a time from the HOWTO as there are often questions asked. Onc answered, any subsequent pastes from the same batch are lost.

    /usr/mailscanner/etc/reports/en/languages.conf
Apr 3 23:00:47 server145 MailScanner[24273]: Looked up unknown string mailscanner in language translation file /usr/mailscanner/etc/reports/en/languages.conf
Have a look for /usr/mailscanner/etc/reports/en/languages.conf.new and rename it to /usr/mailscanner/etc/reports/en/languages.conf

    It's mentioned in the HOWTO:

"At this point you should edit MailScanner.conf and make any modifications that you want to new settings added by the upgrade.

In particular, search the file for "Custom Functions Dir" and change the value from /opt/MailScanner/blah to /usr/mailscanner/blah"

I'm afraid I don't know. I can only guess that you missed out a step. I would suggest backing it off and trying again:

    mv mailscanner mailscanner.duff
    mv mailscanner.old mailscanner

    Then start again.

    Certainly, from /usr/mailscanner/etc/MailScanner.conf:

    Custom Functions Dir = /usr/mailscanner/lib/MailScanner/CustomFunctions
