Default .html v .shtml for error docs

If I preferred to have .html files as error documents rather than .shtml, is theer a way to globally set this or do I need to do it on a client by client basis in their respective .htaccess files? Are there any issues related to making this change that I would need to be aware fo before blindly making such a change?

    Thanks!
